After two weeks the shoes were tested for contaminants and the results were alarming.
Shoes had varying amounts of bacteria. Some shoes had 420,000 units of bacteria. Potential levels on E. Coli were found on over two-thirds of the shoes. Waste water generated from domestic activities such as laundry, dishwashing, food, drinks, grease, tar and dust were found on all shoes.
These contaminants are carried from place to place and can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. Carpets can have a beneficial impact as they can act as an environmental filter trapping soils, bacteria and contaminants and stopping them before they become airborne.
The effectiveness of carpeting as an environmental filter is always dependent on maintenance. Carpets must be cleaned and maintained at regular intervals in order to protect indoor air quality.
