There is no role more vital to public health then that of the custodian or janitor in oursociety. Unfortunately for hard working custodians there is a very negative stereotype in being a custodian that is not based in the reality of their service to the community. For those in this industry it is Important to note there is more at stake than the perceptions we have about these vital workers. Janitorial workers have one of the highest rates of occupational asthma and a host of other dangers that could come from mixing the wrong chemicals or injuries from falling. In spite of all these dangers custodians and janitors are playing an incalculable service to public safety and health. They prevent illness and infection, contribute to the quality of our air and protect our environment.
Some problems facing this industry include no educational requirements or certifications are necessary to hold these jobs. There is also the problem of low pay in spite of the fact that they work hard, they do a dirty, repetitive job, they work late at night at night and there are many things that can and do go wrong.
This leads to a major industry problem in turnover of workers. With rates cited between 50and 200% facilities could be replacing the entire workforce once every two years or four times a year. One way to tackle this problem is through office cleaning services training programs. Regular, in-depth training provide opportunities to raise pay but it also shows workers the company values them, wants to enhance their skill level and this has shown to reduce turnover in recent studies.
Budgets constraints cause some companies from providing this type of training and many organizations don’t see the value in training. Upfront costs and the potential of having to pay more for certified and trained workers puts companies off but that is shortsighted. If you reduce the turnover rate you will save money because of the costs of retraining and man hours lost while you find, and hire replacement workers constantly. Companies don’t have to purchase comprehensive management systems to provide high quality programs for their workers. Most suppliers offer complimentary training for cleaning staff as a service for doing business with them.
Finally, don’t underestimate the value of having a well-articulated recognition and praise component to your business model. Office Cleaning Technicians must be made to feel they are an integral part of the larger organization or company. Janitors should be made to feel appreciated and proud of the service they provide to a vital industry and a successful company will work hard to create a culture where everyone from bottom to top sees their role as vital to the overall success of the organization.
