Not only are clean schools healthy for student’s bodies; they also may be healthy for their minds at well. A study conducted by APPA’s Center for Facilities Research, researching the correlation between cleanliness and learning. Almost 1,500 students were surveyed on their opinions regarding cleanliness and their ability to learn and concentrate, specifically relating to a positive learning environment. The study concluded:
The study shows the importance of a clean school and how a messy or dingy school may actually impact the students who are trying to learn. Cleanliness ranked in the top four factors relating to the environment that can detract from a positive learning environment for the students.
Summer Cleaning For Schools
This study makes a good point for using the summer months to get educational facilities cleaned to the “orderly spotlessness” that is needed for a positive learning environment. With students and teachers away for the summer break, it is the perfect time to do a thorough cleaning on school facilities, making it easier to keep them to a higher standard once school is back in session in the fall. A professional deep cleaning of floors, carpets, walls, bathrooms and fixtures can bring a new shine to the entire facility.
If a clean school can have a positive impact on learning, it is certainly worth the time, effort and investment. Students in the study even agreed by an 80% margin that they should be involved in keeping their campuses clean. A good start would be to have schools go through a professional cleaning during the summer, with everyone pitching in throughout the year to keep a clean and positive learning environment for all students.
