One modern certainty of office work, whether in a warehouse or a cubicle, is how much allergies can impact productivity.
A couple of times of year, allergen level spike outdoors and employee’s responses can typically go off the chart. This often means lost efficiency at best, and even missed work from suffering staffers.
There are a number of ways an office can combat the allergy situation, both during those dreaded spike periods, but also leading up to allergy season.
We’ve all seen how pollen builds up outdoors, often on window sills or even the hoods of cars. That fine substance, along with other allergens, can easily get drawn into a workspace, where sometimes even a very small amount can trigger an attack.
The best defense against indoor allergy issues is keeping clutter under control, both large and small. Pilled-up papers, or even a messy break room, gives the allergen a place to hide, meaning it can get tucked between things and missed during regular light cleaning.
This can leave allergens in place well after the season, just waiting to get stirred up so that they can stir up others. By reducing clutter as much as possible, we minimize the hiding places for trouble spots.
As allergens are carried along by the wind, or indoors by central air, it often settles in corner areas. One favorite spot is among boxes of files stacked into the corner of a room. They also love higher shelves that often don’t get dusted as frequently.
These little culprits are often brought into a workspace by attaching themselves directly to employees, or on office supplies or other inventories being delivered. For this reason, many offices encourage their staffers to do a simple brush-off before entering, at least during those peak allergy days.
Our shoulders and our hairstyles often catch the brunt of it, and likewise our shoes. Allergens often fall and settle on flat surfaces, where they can quickly accumulate without being noticed.
Tapping off shoes and brushing off shoulders routinely before entering the workspace can help dislodge the little pests, as can a light shake of the head. These small efforts alone can go a long way to keeping everyone’s workspace a bit healthier.
Likewise it’s a good idea to dust off any files or boxes coming in from the outside during peak allergy season. We typically don’t see most allergens on surfaces until they accumulate, so they’re often there without us knowing it.
Together employees can help minimize everyone’s exposure by remembering to fight allergies where they live. The quick methods during peak allergy warnings can help greatly reduce a lingering effect that can last for weeks.
