Flooring, there are many people interested in learning more about this material as it becomes one of the fastest growing floor choices available. Polished concrete is popular with commercial buildings because of the ease of maintenance and because recent technology is making it easier and less costly to install. A polished concrete floor has a glossy, mirror-like finish. The floors reflectivity is controlled by using different levels of concrete polishing and maintaining polished concrete requires dust mopping and the occasional use of cleaning product.
Polishing concrete is very similar to sanding wood. Heavy polishing machines are used to gradually grind down surfaces to whatever shine or smoothness is desired. The polishing process begins when your contractor uses specialized equipment to remove minor pits, stains and blemishes from the concrete. This usually requires three or four steps to initially grind down concrete.
The next step involves crews using ever finer grits of polishing disks until the floor has the desired sheen. A sealer is applied during this process that protects the concrete from the inside out. This will eliminate the need for any other coating and also reduces maintenance. Some contractors finish off the flooring with a commercial polishing compound to give the floor more sheen.
Once your floor is installed, you can polish concrete using a dry or wet method. Dry polishing is the method used most commonly in the flooring industry today because its faster, more efficient and more environmentally friendly.
