Any time that your home or business is exposed to large quantities of water, there is a chance of damage to your property. Even small plumbing leaks can cause enough moisture to create mold and destroy drywall, carpets and sub-floors. However, water damage is categorized differently, based on the type of water that is released into your structure. These categories can define how dangerous the water damage is to health and outline the methods needed to restore the building.
Category 1
The first category of water loss or damage is the most benign. These are clear water issues, usually from a plumbing problem, appliance or even rain. This water is odorless and clear, without danger of carrying harmful bacteria or other pathogens. This is the easiest category to clean and has the least danger of health risks.
Category 2
Wastewater, such as water from your toilet, can contain harmful bacteria and microorganisms. Although not sewage, it is called gray water that can contaminate surfaces and spread disease. This type of water damage is referred to a Category 2, which has the possibility of causing health risks. This level needs immediate removal from any structure.
Category 3
The highest risk water damage is from sewage leaks. This “black water” is aptly named, as most Category 3 water damage situations will have water that is black in color, usually with a foul odor, containing bacteria, fungi and even parasites. This is the worst-case scenario, with concerns for contamination and health, as well as damage from the water. Category 2 can be upgraded to a Category 3 if not resolved quickly.
The category of water damage will determine the measures that will be needed to clean and restore the premises. At Gator Cleaning Solutions, we offer full water damage restoration services, for all three categories, to carefully remove all signs of water and contaminants from your home or business.
