Molds or fungi come in thousands of varieties, each similar, yet different. Almost all mold requires a warm, moist environment to grow. However, how these molds feed and spread are often very different. There are many molds that are found in homes, some fairly benign, while others can be very dangerous to your family’s health. While all mold growth should be controlled and removed from homes to prevent property damage and risks to health, there are some that are more hazardous than others.
Molds That Release Toxins
It is important to remember that mold spores are almost always in the air, traveling into your home via an open window or door, and on the surface of clothes, shoes and other items. Yet, most of these mold spores are harmless and are not dangerous to you or your home. It is when there is excess moisture trapped in your home from a leak, poor air circulation or flood damage that these mold spores may land and begin to grow into harmful, toxin-releasing entities.
Mold itself is not toxic; however, some molds are toxigenic, releasing mycotoxins into the air. These toxins are what can cause health problems, especially in the respiratory system. Small children and people with asthma, compromised immune systems and allergies to mold are more susceptible to these toxins. Some of the molds that are known to irritate existing health problems and possibly cause other health issues include:
It is safe to say that if you find mold growing in your home on walls, under sinks or anywhere it is moist, it is cause for concern. Since there are hundreds of thousands of molds, plus various types of each species, it is difficult to identify a mold by sight alone. You will need to have the mold and air tested to determine the type of mold that is growing in your home. Regardless of the type, you need to have the mold removed before it causes damage to your home, in addition to removing the source of moisture to prevent future mold infestations.
